Alsico UK & HCA Healthcare UK:
transforming private healthcare uniforms
5000+ staff, over 30 locations
HCA Healthcare UK operates a network of leading private hospitals, outpatient centres, medical centres, and specialist clinics across London, Manchester and Birmingham. Its portfolio includes hospitals such as The Harley Street Clinic, The Portland Hospital, London Bridge Hospital, The Harborne Hospital, The Wilmslow Hospital, and a private care wing in partnership with University College Hospital (UCLH) specialising in blood disorders and cancer.
Alsico UK’s partnership with HCA UK began through a procurement tender process initiated in 2023, given HCA’s desire to consolidate its uniform provision under a reliable, responsive and innovative manufacturer. This case study explores how alsico responded to HCA’s challenges and grew into a strategic long-term partner.
the challenge
HCA Healthcare UK wanted to take a more unified, forward-looking approach to its uniform – one that reflected the quality and professionalism of its brand whilst ensuring a smooth, reliable service for its teams across multiple locations.
Through this process, HCA identified opportunities to:
- Improve lead time predictability and supply resilience
- Establish dedicated account management
- Develop a responsive understanding of evolving operational needs
- Simplify ordering and stock management
In essence, HCA was looking for a partner who could not only deliver garments, but manage the entire uniform experience, at scale – from consultation to fulfilment.
Additionally, operating in a private healthcare environment, HCA felt a need to refresh their existing uniform styles and colours as part of their project to unify and galvanise the business behind one single brand. HCA needed a uniform identity that presented and reflected the modern, premium service that they provide to thousands of patients, whilst being professional, sensible and warm – a reflection of the services they provide.
There was also a key focus on sustainability, wearer comfort and fabric innovation – meaning any new partner would need to demonstrate both creative and technical capability.
the solution
Following a competitive and successful procurement process, alsico worked closely with HCA’s leadership team to propose a fresh, robust solution. Throughout, we focused on alignment, transparency and building trust – showing we understood what “experience” really means in a partnership: responsiveness, honesty and consistency.
digital tools and design innovation
A dedicated online portal was developed with an integrated digital sizing tool – allowing HCA wearers to order their individual and respective uniforms efficiently, reduce returns and eliminate the need for in-person sizing sessions.
To enhance the experience further, our designers used Style3D technology to render uniform concepts in true-to-life 3D. This gave HCA decision-makers the ability to visualise designs, explore fit and fabric options virtually, and sign off confidently before any physical samples were made.
fabric innovation and bespoke design
We proposed a shift away from traditional tunics and fabrics, moving towards sustainability-focused innovations powered by our fabric stretch technology, ALSIFLEX® – designed to deliver enhanced freedom of movement, breathability and comfort.
After design samples were produced, HCA immediately recognised the difference. The drape, comfort and premium aesthetic redefined how they wanted their teams to look and feel – prompting a full rebrand of their uniform identity.
