transforming NHS Healthcare Uniforms across England

Alsico is proud to be an awarded workwear supplier on the NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework, supplying Trusts and GP surgeries across England.

This project aims to revolutionise uniform provision across NHS England Trusts, offering exceptional value, enhanced sustainability, a professional image, and fostering an inclusive culture.

As an awarded supplier, we are committed to supporting over 600,000 healthcare professionals with high-quality uniforms.

What’s particularly encouraging is seeing the framework move from concept to reality across multiple trusts. The initial implementation in November 2024 provided invaluable insight, and since then we’ve seen growing confidence in a national approach to uniforms. Trusts are recognising the long-term value, not just in cost management, but in inclusivity, sustainability and professional identity.

The framework continues to support teams with garments designed alongside healthcare professionals, prioritising stretch, comfort and inclusivity. Our whole team at Alsico remains incredibly proud to be part of this important initiative, and we look forward to continuing to work with trusts nationwide as adoption grows and the long-term benefits of the new uniform approach are realised.

what is the NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework?

The NHS Healthcare Uniforms Framework is a national initiative, introduced in 2024, that aims to revolutionise how NHS Healthcare Uniforms are sourced and supplied across NHS Trusts in England. It brings exceptional value for money, enhanced sustainability, an improved professional image, and fosters an inclusive culture where everyone feels recognised and valued.

NHS Supply Chain leads this project to introduce a nationally standardised approach to hospital uniforms across England, simplifying procurement for NHS Trusts and introducing high-quality, innovative healthcare uniforms developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals.

The NHS Supply Chain Uniform Framework is expected to yield 30% cost savings nationally, reflecting the values of innovation, adaptability, and unity. For NHS England Trusts, the new NHS Healthcare Uniform represents a significant step forward in standardised, sustainable uniform provision.

consultations & wearer trials

consultation results

Extensive engagement with patients, visitors, NHS Trusts, and healthcare professionals revealed strong support for a standardised uniform. The national workforce consultation received over 50,000 responses, with 82% agreeing on the adoption of a standardised NHS Healthcare Uniform.

wearer trials

Prototypes underwent rigorous field tests to refine the design, incorporating feedback from NHS staff. The trials ensured that the uniforms provided a full range of movement, supported a comfortable temperature, and were easy to launder.

As the first trust to introduce the new uniform, we have made it easier for patients and visitors to recognise the roles of the colleagues caring for them across all five of our hospitals. This change supports a better experience for those receiving care at UHDB, while also improving comfort for our teams and enhancing the sustainability of the clothing worn across our workforce.

We worked closely with Alsico, NHS Supply Chain and other partners to support colleagues across all five sites through the transition. Although a change of this scale naturally brings challenges, our collaborative approach meant we were able to successfully move more than 8,000 team members into their new uniforms. We are grateful to everyone involved for their support throughout the project, and we are pleased to have received positive feedback from colleagues, who tell us their uniforms are both comfortable and durable during long clinical shifts.

pathfinder trusts

NHS Supply Chain collaborated with early adopters know as 'pathfinder trusts'. These trusts are providing insightful feedback, identify early challenges, and analysing their experience to help future implementation with other Trusts. Their involvement ensures a smoother transition benefitting both healthcare staff and patients.

"The project has been a huge undertaking, and the feedback and experiences of our pathfinder trusts has been invaluable, helping us shape and refine the implementation process for the next cycle of trusts adopting the uniform."

NHS Healthcare Uniforms are designed for all clinical staff across NHS England Trusts. The NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework covers Nursing and Midwifery Professions, Allied Health Professions (including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and radiographers), Healthcare Science and Pharmacy professionals, and multi-profession support roles.

Each group is identified by distinct colourways, ensuring patients and colleagues can easily recognise different NHS staff by their uniforms across hospital and community settings. NHS Trusts and other large firms interested in NHS Healthcare Uniform procurement can work with alsico to map their staff roles to the correct colourway.

frequently asked questions about the NHS Healthcare Uniform

The NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework aims to create a standardised approach to uniform provision, led by NHS Supply Chain. It replaces the previous system where each Trust sourced its own uniforms independently, often at widely varying costs. The framework introduces a single range of high-quality, sustainable healthcare uniforms designed in collaboration with clinical professionals, delivering 30–50% cost savings nationally.

Yes, the new NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework is currently only implemented across NHS organisations in England. In other parts of the UK, such as Scotland and Wales, NHS staff follow separate national uniform policies that provide guidance and standards for their NHS uniforms.

No, adoption of the NHS Healthcare Uniform is optional. Healthcare organisations can choose to transition to the new uniform when their current uniform contract reaches its natural replacement cycle. Our teams are on hand to support any NHS Trusts or GP surgeries considering the switch.

NHS Trusts can access the new NHS Healthcare Uniforms through NHS Supply Chain's procurement process. Alsico, as an awarded supplier on the framework, works directly with each Trust to support implementation, from initial colourway mapping and sizing through to rollout planning and ongoing supply. Contact our dedicated NHS team to begin the process.

The NHS Healthcare Uniform Framework covers all clinical staff who currently wear a uniform, including Nursing and Midwifery Professions, Allied Health Professions, Healthcare Science and Pharmacy professionals, and multi-profession support roles. Each professional group is distinguished by specific uniform colours.

By standardising design, materials, and colours across NHS England, the framework harnesses the collective purchasing power of the NHS to deliver significant savings. Individual Trust savings will vary depending on current spend, but across England the framework is expected to save 30% on uniform costs. That equates to approximately £10 million over three years if all Trusts adopt.

Yes. The new NHS Healthcare Uniforms are now available to GP surgeries across England. Unlike NHS Trusts, GP surgeries can order directly through alsico rather than through NHS Supply Chain. This gives practices a straightforward route to adopting the same standardised, professional uniform worn across the wider NHS.
