NHS National Healthcare Uniform Framework

The NHS National Healthcare Uniform Framework

The NHS Healthcare Uniforms' project aims to revolutionise uniform provision across NHS trusts in England. This initiative brings exceptional value for money, enhanced sustainability, an improved professional image, and fosters an inclusive culture where everyone feels recognised and valued.

NHS Supply Chain leads this project to introduce a nationally standardised approach to uniforms, simplifying the process and introducing high-quality, innovative garments developed in collaboration with healthcare professionals. The project represents a significant step forward across the NHS in England.

pathfinder trusts

NHS Supply Chain collaborated with early adopters know as 'pathfinder trusts'. These trusts are providing insightful feedback, identify early challenges, and analysing their experience to help future implementation with other trusts.

This new national unform has to be fit for purpose, easy to wear, and, most of all, make the users feel empowered to continue doing their life-saving work.

I feel incredibly proud to be leading the team that will deliver a safe and professional uniform across the country that has thought about equality, diversity, and inclusion, as well as value for money and sustainability.

consultation and wearer trials

consultation results

Extensive engagement with patients, visitors, trusts, and healthcare professionals revealed strong support for a standardised uniform. The national workforce consultation received over 50,000 responses, with 82% agreeing on the adoption of a standardised National Healthcare Uniform.

wearer trials

Prototypes underwent rigorous field tests to refine the design, incorporating feedback from NHS staff. The trials ensured that the uniforms provided a full range of movement, supported a comfortable temperature, and were easy to launder.

inclusive for all wearers

The new NHS Healthcare Uniform has been designed with universal appeal and cultural sensitivity, ensuring every member of the NHS diverse workforce feels recognised and valued.

Traditional sizing has been replaced with a non-gender-specific system, empowering all individuals to choose uniforms that reflect their identities.

professional image and suitability

Developed with continuous input from trusts, NHS England, and professional bodies such as the National Midwifery Council and The Royal College of Nursing, the NHS Healthcare Uniform strikes a balance between modern design and functionality. The design incorporates feedback from colleagues who have trialled the uniform, ensuring durability, comfort, and breathability. Garments are available in an extended range of sizes and lengths, including a full maternity range.
