why uniform fit is more than just comfort
For care workers, what they wear isn’t just a uniform – it’s an essential tool for doing their job safely, confidently and comfortably. However, alsico’s latest research has shown that not every care professional feels supported by what they wear.
When asked about uniform fit, over half (58%) of care workers said that how their uniform fits directly affects how well they can carry out their duties. And, almost a third admitted they’ve had to wear uniforms that didn’t fit properly.
They’re striking statistics – and ones that highlights how uniform comfort goes far beyond appearance or preference. It directly impacts physical wellbeing, performance and even job satisfaction.
the hidden link between uniform comfort and performance
Care work is physically demanding. From assisting residents with mobility to handling equipment and maintaining high hygiene standards, freedom of movement is essential. Yet, poorly fitted care home uniforms can restrict that movement, increase strain and contribute to discomfort that builds throughout long shifts.
A uniform that moves with the body, rather than against it, supports both efficiency and endurance. It also helps reduce fatigue and the risk of minor injuries – which, over time, can lead to absence or even loss of staff from the sector altogether.
“Stretch, softer materials and range of motion are critical for today’s wearer to complete their responsibilities comfortably. What you put on your body everyday matters, which is why we spend so much time on innovation as a business, exploring polymer science, fibre and yarn construction and fabric finishing to create uniforms that meet these needs.”
Sara Catanzaro, Design Manager at alsico
uniform fit, feedback and feeling heard
Alsico’s research also revealed that one in five care workers don’t feel their employer acts on feedback about uniform fit or working conditions. That sense of not being listened to can have a real impact on morale and retention.
When staff are given a voice in what they wear, they feel valued, and that translates into greater pride, engagement and confidence in their role. Listening and acting on feedback doesn’t just improve comfort – it fosters a culture of trust and inclusion.
Organisations like Majesticare are already putting this into practice.
At Majesticare, our uniform selection process is really collaborative for this very reason, we get the samples in and then we bring them to the team for honest, firsthand feedback on what works and gives them the flexibility, comfort and breathability to do their jobs in our care home environment. If that’s not a stage in your current selection process – it should be.

the role of uniform innovation in everyday wellbeing
Uniforms are one of the most visible symbols of care work, but their value goes far beyond appearance.
The right fit, fabrics and design can empower staff to move, perform and care with confidence. They can reduce injuries, boost job satisfaction, and help attract and retain skilled workers in a sector where people are the most valuable asset.
Innovation in textile technology means care home uniforms can now perform better than ever – with moisture-wicking fabrics, four-way stretch and breathable blends designed to adapt to every shift. These advances don’t just improve comfort; they can contribute to better concentration, mood and motivation.
designing uniforms that care, too
At alsico, every garment begins with the wearer. The goal? To create healthcare uniforms and protective workwear that actively supports movement, regulates temperature and maintains durability through daily wear and washing.
For us, comfort isn’t a coincidence – it’s a science. Every design decision, from fabric choice to garment construction, is rooted in wearer insight and field testing. So, through continual research, feedback and innovation, we’re creating uniforms that make work better – because when care workers feel supported, everyone benefits.

We also work closely with care providers to create collaborative uniform programmes – inviting feedback, testing samples with teams, and refining fit based on real-world insight. Because when organisations listen to their people and partner with experts, small changes can make a big difference.
Uniform fit isn’t just about appearance. It’s about dignity, confidence and the ability to do vital work comfortably and safely.
