BS 30417 and alsico UK

Fit matters – Safety depends on it.

BS 30417 gives organisations the guidance they need to make PPE inclusive for everyone. Alsico is here to help you turn that guidance into action.

what is BS 30417?

BS 30417 is a new British Standard that provides practical guidance to make personal protective equipment (PPE) more inclusive. It sets out clear recommendations to help employers and manufacturers design, select and supply PPE that meets the needs of every worker — regardless of body shape, size, gender, pregnancy, religion, or cultural background.

In simple terms, it’s about making sure everyone is protected, comfortable and able to do their job safely. However, it also helps organisations meet their legal duty to provide suitable PPE under the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at Work Regulations – filling a long-recognised gap in practical, user-centred guidance, especially around fit, comfort, and equitable access.

"Practical guidance designed to ensure employers across all sectors provide staff with personal protective equipment (PPE) that fits, regardless of gender, ethnicity, body shape, age, or disability, has been issued in a long-awaited move designed to help struggling sectors retained skilled workers and ultimately enhance people’s safety at work."

key areas of BS 30417

  • understanding user needs

In a recent survey conducted by alsico, almost half of respondents (47%) said they would want to wear their uniform if it was more comfortable. Comfort isn’t just how it feels – it’s about considering all factors of a person and their individual needs, including body type, gender, pregnancy, disability, and cultural requirements.

  • fit testing and adjustments

Workwear needs to consider the user, just as much as the working environment. When selecting workwear, selectors need to ensure PPE is suitable for the individual, not just technically compliant, by conducting using accurate and reliable sizing tools, fit testing the garments and taking adjustment requests seriously.

  • training and information

In our survey, we found that almost a quarter of respondents (23%) had never been told how to wear their uniform to keep them safe, and close to a third (31%) had not been told how to specifically look after their workwear.  Employers need to ensure all users know how to wear and maintain PPE, and know how to raise issues safely.

  • inclusive selection and procurement

When selecting workwear, selectors should involve users in decision-making to find what will keep them comfortable and safe – leaving no compromise. Avoid default reliance on “one-size-fits-all” PPE.

  • roles and responsibilities

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act, employers are responsible for providing suitable PPE. The BSI, in BS 30417, recommend that a named, competent person oversees inclusive PPE processes to ensure that selected garments are both compliant and fully considered.

  • balancing cost with safety

Price should never override proper fit, suitability or comfort. Why? Because it compromises safety and, ultimately, compliance. Cutting corners to save costs can end up costing far more in the long run.

  • monitoring and feedback

To support the implementation and long-term success of inclusive PPE, monitoring and feedback is key. This includes continuous improvement through engagement, review and data protection compliance.

Safety starts with the right fit

Designing garments that fit and protect every body type is central to true inclusivity in workwear and PPE. As workforce diversity continues to evolve, so must the science behind fit, ensuring that every wearer experiences the same level of comfort, movement, and safety — regardless of shape, size, or gender.

data-driven fit insight

At alsico, we’ve built one of the most comprehensive fit databases in the industry — analysing over two million body measurements across regions, genders, and ethnic groups. This data enables us to define multiple body blocks that truly represent the diversity of the modern workforce.

advanced design testing

Using 3D simulation fitting, wearer trials, and real-world feedback, we study how variations in body shape affect garment performance — from mobility to pressure points and overall comfort. These insights directly inform our design standards, leading to more adaptive fits and refined garment architecture.

innovative construction features

Strategically placed elastication, ergonomic shaping, and adjustable design details ensure garments move with the wearer — maintaining protection, mobility, and comfort across a wide range of body proportions.
