our arc flash testing methods

open arc test (EN 61482-1-1)

This test determines the ATPV, EBT, and ELIM values for garments. It simulates an open Arc Flash to assess how much thermal energy the garment can withstand before the wearer is at risk.

box test (EN 61482-1-2)

In this test, garments are exposed to an Arc within a confined box to simulate a real-world scenario. The test measures the Arc Protection Class (APC) and assesses the garment's ability to protect against a defined level of Arc energy.

frequently asked questions

Under arc flash coveralls, it’s typically recommended to wear garments made from non-melting, natural fibres such as cotton. In higher-risk environments, arc-rated base layers may be advised to enhance protection. Always consult your organisation’s safety procedures and relevant risk assessments to ensure correct layering.

The appropriate arc rating depends on the specific incident energy level at the worksite, which should be determined through an arc flash risk assessment. Always ensure garments meet or exceed the calculated energy exposure risk for the task.

Arc flash risks are present across multiple sectors, including power generation and distribution, utilities, rail, industrial maintenance, data centres, construction, and renewable energy. Any role involving work near live electrical systems may require arc-rated PPE.

A formal arc flash risk assessment is essential to determine if arc flash PPE is required. If your team works in proximity to live electrical equipment or performs tasks where arc energy is present, arc-rated garments may be necessary. Always refer to current regulations and risk assessment findings.

Arc flash garments are typically certified to EN 61482-1-1 (Open Arc) and/or EN 61482-1-2 (Box Test). Other applicable standards may include EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), EN 1149 (anti-static), and EN ISO 20471 (high visibility), depending on the role and environment.

While all arc-rated coveralls are flame resistant, not all FR garments are arc-rated. Arc flash coveralls undergo additional testing to measure protection against electrical arc energy. Check for appropriate certification (e.g. ATPV, EBT, ELIM) before use in arc flash environments.

An arc flash risk assessment typically includes identifying electrical hazards, calculating incident energy levels (in cal/cm²), and establishing protection boundaries. It should be carried out by a qualified person and documented in line with local regulations and best practices. Always follow your organisation’s safety protocols or consult a certified expert.

The most relevant standards include:

  • EN 61482-1-1: Open Arc Test (determines ELIM, ATPV, EBT values)
  • EN 61482-1-2: Box Test (determines APC classification)
  • IEC 61482-2: Overall arc flash PPE performance
Other applicable standards may relate to secondary hazards or visibility requirements.

Replacement depends on factors such as usage frequency, exposure conditions, and visible wear or damage. Regular inspections are essential. Follow the manufacturer’s care and maintenance guidelines, and replace garments that no longer meet safety requirements.

Layering arc-rated garments can enhance overall protection by increasing the total arc rating and improving thermal insulation. However, compatibility between layers is important. All layers should be arc-rated, and the total system performance should be understood—never assume added layers increase protection without proper evaluation.

Yes. At alsico, we offer custom-made arc flash solutions tailored to the needs of specific industries and job functions. This can include adaptations such as additional pockets, knee pad integration, branded embroidery, or specialised fit and fabrics—all designed in line with safety standards.
