our arc flash testing methods
open arc test (EN 61482-1-1)
This test determines the ATPV, EBT, and ELIM values for garments. It simulates an open Arc Flash to assess how much thermal energy the garment can withstand before the wearer is at risk.
box test (EN 61482-1-2)
In this test, garments are exposed to an Arc within a confined box to simulate a real-world scenario. The test measures the Arc Protection Class (APC) and assesses the garment's ability to protect against a defined level of Arc energy.

frequently asked questions
It’s generally advisable to wear non-melting, natural fibre base layers—such as cotton—under arc flash trousers. In some cases, arc-rated base layers may be used to provide additional protection. Always refer to your internal safety protocols and the results of a formal risk assessment before selecting underlayers.
The appropriate arc rating for trousers depends entirely on the level of incident energy present in the working environment, which should be determined through a professional arc flash risk assessment. Ratings are typically expressed in cal/cm². Always select garments that meet or exceed the calculated energy exposure.
Arc flash trousers may be required in sectors where there is a risk of electrical arc exposure. These include utilities, power generation, renewable energy, industrial maintenance, rail, and construction, among others. Requirements vary depending on the specific tasks and work environments involved.
A risk assessment is the best way to determine whether arc-rated trousers are required. If employees are working on or near live electrical equipment, arc flash PPE—including trousers—may be necessary depending on the energy levels involved. Always consult safety guidelines and a qualified professional.
Arc flash trousers are typically tested to EN 61482-1-1 (Open Arc) and/or EN 61482-1-2 (Box Test), and may also meet other standards depending on secondary hazards, such as EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), EN 1149 (anti-static), or EN ISO 20471 (hi-vis), where applicable.
All arc flash trousers are flame resistant, but not all flame-resistant trousers are arc-rated. Arc-rated garments undergo additional testing specifically for electrical arc protection and are assigned an arc rating (e.g. ATPV, ELIM). Always check certification to confirm suitability for arc flash risks.
An arc flash risk assessment typically involves identifying electrical hazards, calculating potential incident energy levels, and establishing safe working distances. These assessments should be carried out by a qualified individual and follow relevant safety standards and industry regulations.
Key standards include:
- EN 61482-1-1 – Open Arc Test
- EN 61482-1-2 – Box Arc Test
- IEC 61482-2 – General arc flash garment requirements
Additional standards may apply based on specific workplace hazards or compliance requirements.
Replacement cycles can vary depending on garment condition, frequency of use, and workplace environment. Regular inspections are essential. Trousers showing signs of damage, wear, or contamination should be withdrawn from service. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and internal safety policies.
Layering can enhance total protection when done correctly, but all layers—including base garments—should be made from non-melting or arc-rated materials. Always confirm compatibility and overall system performance, and consult with a qualified specialist to determine appropriate configurations.
Yes. Arc flash trousers can often be custom-made to include specific features—such as tool pockets, kneepad compartments, or design adjustments for comfort and branding. Any customisation should maintain compliance with applicable safety standards.
