EN ISO 14116
European and international standard for flame-resistant workwear.
EN ISO 14116 sets the standard for flame-resistant workwear that minimises the risk of ignition and prevents flame spread. Alsico designs and manufactures certified protective garments that combine comfort, durability, and compliance. Our protective clothing helps employers safeguard their teams and meet essential safety standards in industrial environments.
what is EN ISO 14116?
EN ISO 14116 outlines the performance requirements for protective work clothing that limits flame spread. Designed for workers exposed to brief or accidental contact with flames, it offers essential protection where full flame or heat resistance is not required. Garments are classified into three performance indexes based on their protection level and resistance to flame spread; Index 1, index 2 and index 3.
EN ISO 14116 is often compared to EN ISO 11612, which covers heat and flame protection in higher-risk environments. While 14116 garments are suitable for incidental exposure, 11612 garments provide extended protection against radiant heat, convective heat, and molten metal splashes.
The EN ISO 14116 standard classifies garments into three performance indexes based on their resistance to flame spread.
EN ISO 14116 index ratings explained
Each index rating under EN ISO 14116 indicates the garment’s flame-spread performance level. Understanding these classifications ensures the correct PPE is specified for the level of risk:
how we test and certify EN ISO 14116 clothing
To meet EN ISO 14116 standards, each fabric and garment undergoes flame spread testing under controlled conditions. Alsico’s in-house quality teams verify that the protective material self-extinguishes and doesn’t continue burning or melt when exposed to flame. This rigorous testing ensures garments maintain integrity, comfort, and compliance.
our EN ISO 14116 protective clothing range
Alsico’s EN ISO 14116-certified clothing is engineered for industries where flame risk is present but not constant such as utilities, transport, and light manufacturing. Every garment is crafted for comfort, breathability, and durability, ensuring consistent performance during long shifts.
frequently asked questions
EN ISO 14116 is a European and international standard for flame-limited protective clothing. It applies to garments designed to reduce the spread of flame when briefly exposed to fire, rather than providing full flame or heat protection.
The standard is typically used for workwear worn in environments where there is an occasional, low-level risk of flame contact — or as part of a layered PPE system alongside higher-level protective garments.
EN ISO 14116 focuses on flame spread only. It ensures that fabrics do not continue to burn, melt, or drip after brief exposure to flame, helping to reduce injury severity.
EN ISO 11612, by contrast, is designed for higher-risk environments and covers protection against heat and flame across multiple performance areas. In simple terms, EN ISO 14116 is suitable for lower-risk or layering applications, whilst EN ISO 11612 is required where direct heat or flame exposure is expected.
EN ISO 14116 garments are classified using an index system that reflects their level of flame-limited performance.
Index 1 offers the lowest level of protection and is often used where flame exposure is unlikely but possible. Index 2 and Index 3 provide increasing levels of flame resistance, with stricter performance requirements during testing.
Crucially, Index 1 garments must not be worn next to the skin unless combined with higher-index layers, as they may ignite during exposure.
EN ISO 14116 is suitable for workers in industries where there is a risk of brief, accidental contact with flame — but not sustained heat exposure.
This can include maintenance teams, engineers, transport and logistics workers, and industrial staff who require everyday workwear with added flame-limited properties, often as part of a layered PPE approach.
Yes — layering is one of the most common applications for EN ISO 14116 clothing.
EN ISO 14116-certified garments are frequently worn beneath or over other PPE, such as EN ISO 11612 flame-resistant outerwear or arc flash protection. When layered correctly, they help improve overall safety by ensuring each garment in the system contributes to flame protection rather than increasing risk.
It does. The standard can be applied to base layers, mid-layers, and outer garments, depending on the index level and intended use.
At alsico, we consider how garments will be worn in real working conditions — ensuring base layers, coveralls, jackets, or overshirts are specified correctly to support safe layering and compliance.
Choosing the correct index depends on your workplace risk assessment, including the likelihood of flame exposure and whether garments will be worn next to the skin.
Our team works closely with customers to understand their operational risks, existing PPE systems, and compliance requirements. This allows us to recommend the most appropriate index rating — without over- or under-specifying protection.
